The second-meal effect isn't about eliminating spikes; it's about smoothing the peaks and troughs so you feel steadier. Fear-based "spike" language oversells the stakes for most people.
"Carbs are the problem, so cut them." The foods driving the second-meal effect are carbohydrates — oats, beans, barley, wholegrains. The lever here is choosing slower carbohydrates, not banishing them. This is a point in favour of carbs, thoughtfully chosen.
"If a little fibre helps, I should double it overnight." Adding a large amount of fibre very suddenly tends to cause bloating and wind while your gut adjusts. Increase gradually and drink enough fluid. Patience beats a heroic Monday.

What it is? - Delaying the first meal to a narrower eating window; the first meal is lunch.
Pros - Simple; can suit appetite rhythms; fewer decisions in the morning; some people find it easy to sustain.
Cons - You lose the chance to set up lunch with an early meal; some feel low-energy or over-hungry by midday.
Who it may suit? - People who genuinely aren't hungry early, or who find a later first meal easier to stick to — provided that first meal is still fibre-forward.
Neither is "correct." Notice the strategies aren't even opposites: someone who skips breakfast can still apply the whole principle to lunch. The real question is whether some meal in your day is set up to help the next one.
The bigger, calmer picture
If there's a takeaway, it's a change of frame rather than a change of groceries. Stop scoring meals one at a time, pass or fail, and start seeing them as a relay — each one handing something to the next. That framing takes the pressure off.
